They can be friends and livelihood, but.....
Animal waste can add harmful bacteria to streams. If you have a dog, cat, or other domestic animal, pick up their waste and dipose of it in a manner that prevents rain or other water from washing it into the stream.
Livestock of any kind should be fenced well away from any stream.
